On a sweltering evening nearly a year ago, I sat down at my computer and decided to get really, actually serious about my business. At the time, it was merely a side-hustle — and an unsuccessful one at that. Until that sweltering evening, I’d operated in one of two modes in my business.

I’d either succumbed to the overwhelm that new entrepreneurs feel, adrift with thousands of listicles and no substance. Or I’d, well, ignored my side hustle, leaving it to lie fallow for weeks or months at a time. Obviously, neither of these plans was working.

In that moment of deciding to get serious, I focused in on a single facet of my business. I also decided to begin (and follow through on) one single, coherent path for getting where I wanted to go.

What did I pick? I chose to build my list first.

And I chose to embark on the 30 Day List-Building Challenge.

In the moment, I could have picked anything. I felt so stuck and so frustrated that picking anything and moving forward would have been a step in the right direction. Luckily, I made the choice that I did.

There’s a reason why, after a year, I still think that Nathalie’s free challenge is better than a number of paid courses I’ve taken.

Yes, I grew my list. Yes, I gained the technical knowledge to grow my business in some huge ways. Yes, I’m still reaping the benefits of these brilliant tactics.

I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t tell you about what the challenge and list building success really did for me and my business.

1. I completely changed my perspective on my business

In one of the earliest lessons, Nathalie asks, “Who do you need to be in order to have a list of 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 subscribers?

In that moment, with my teeny-tiny list, I had no idea. I was, however, determined to find out. I was determined to become the person I needed to be in order to have that larger list.

That question is one that I still keep in the back of my mind, as I approach a new tier of growth: Who do I need to be now? How can I step into and embody that?

That’s the perspective that I take every morning that I sit down and begin to attend to my work for the day.

2. I (finally!) had a tangible, clear, and actionable way to take control of my list-building.

There are, seemingly, endless blog posts and list-based articles that talk about email list growth. Some of them are great, but it’s impossible to keep track of all of the advice floating around.

Through the 30 Day List-Building Challenge, there is a simple, centralized place to get your marching orders for the day.

Not sure what to do? At loose ends?

Go watch Nathalie’s video for the day, take the action steps, and then chill. The videos are the right blend of practical and aspirational. Plus, having everything in one place (and being able to track my progress) was a godsend.

3. I explored possibilities I didn’t know existed — and built experimentation into my business.

Kindle books? Live online events? Giveaways? I never in a million years would have thought that I’d be the person to pull these off. While not every tactic is one that I still use to this day, the challenge has a little bit of something for everyone.

The point is not for every tactic to be the perfect fit, but instead to take on a practice of curiosity, experimentation, and reflection.

This is now a big part of how I lead my business. Plus, when I did discover some things that worked, I was able to weave them into my work in a way that felt authentically me.

Now, those live online events are one of my signatures! (And, yes, they’re still growing my list for me.)

4. I found the courage to step into my business as its leader.

I’m admittedly one of those people who hates to put herself out there.

Through the challenge, I discovered all of the ways that I’d been hiding in my business. Every new day, I had to fix my courage and expand my comfort zone.

If I didn’t understand a technical piece, I would figure it out. If I was afraid to speak in front of an audience, I learned to step up and do it. If I needed to send a pitch email, I would hold my breath and press send. Now, these things feel like second nature.

The course challenged me in ways I didn’t expect, and it’s made me a more resilient and courageous leader in my business.
